Comic Scripts: West, Part 9

Been a while since I posted last! No use in talking too much about it, just saying that I got situated in college, and I'm doing some work for the Radio station that's creating some fresh material for this blog. I still have to polish it, probably do some rewriting, but I'm pretty pleased.

In the meantime, here's more West.

Comic Scripts: West, Part 8

I am not even going to try and explain the delay. My policy at this point is to give a cheerful smile, a curt wave, and hope it all works out for the best. Here's a couple more pages, if'n you're interested.

Incidentally, this is one of my favorite sequences in the story. It's really the place where all the different agendas and ideals butt up against each other in earnest, which is one of the main reasons I liked writing this script.

Incidentally, I've got a title for this story now! Poorer Than You Came, Parts One and Two. I'm pretty satisfied with it, and it feels good to stop calling it just "The Banker Story"

Comic Scripts: West, Part 7

And so, West returns with the start of issue two! I'm using the issue break to justify the lateness of his, for my own peace of mind more than anything.

Something I like to think I did well in the issue was giving the Cooke Brothers distinctive styles. I don't want any character to be interchangeable, if I can help it, so I figured I'd give each of them some verbal mannerisms to help distinguish them. I use that kind of thing again, to... eh, mixed results, in the next issue, but that's neither here nor there.

Hope you like West #2!

Comic Scripts: West, Part 6

And so we reach the end of the first issue of West. I actually really enjoy working in the twenty-two page format - moreso, I think, than doing full novels. With a harshly limited pagecount, I feel a lot more aware of pacing and how much a given amount of writing is "worth" in a certain sense. When I don't have any limits, I sometimes find myself spending way too many words on stuff that doesn't really need it.

In any case, the story of Thomas Kearn and Boneshade will be wrapping up next issue. Stay tuned!

Comic Scripts: West, Part 5

Blagh Blagh Blagh Blagh Blagh.

Swear to Dog, I have an excuse. A good one! See, from Friday until Monday, I was actually in Iowa, checking out my college, and thus without reliable access to the internet! So, it's not totally my fault!

...Well, Friday I guess is a bit my fault.

Plus, plus, I picked up some kind of nasty bug on the plane out there or something, which is why I didn't update on Monday or yesterday. See? Totally not my fault.

Sigh.

No use crying over spilt milk, might as well post the next scene or so. I really like this one, incidentally.

Comic Scripts: West, Part 4

And so the schedule gets back on track with the next couple of pages! These were extremely difficult to plot out in the end, because there's a fair amount that I needed to communicate about Stacy, Kearn, and Frank's motivations and outlooks, even though I REALLY did not want to resort to straight exposition. The result is a lot of space spent in the panel descriptions, but I think a good artist could make it clear what's going on.

Then again, not being an artist, I could be totally wrong. Either way, here are the pages.

Comic Scripts: West, Part 3

Whelp, I suppose it was only a matter of time until I missed the schedule. Gotta say, I expected to do better than TWO POSTS on time.

Blah. In any case, here's the next scene. Part four arriving in about half an hour, so Stay Tuned!

Comics Scripts: West. Part 2

For once keeping up with my schedule, barely, Here's the next couple of pages of "West" #1. Come to think of it, I should probably come up with an actual name for this story. Maybe later. Actually, if you think of anything, please put it in the comments, since every idea I've had about it has sucked.

Anyway, on with the story!

Comic Scripts: West, Part 1

So, I've spent the last couple of months largely working on an extensive personal project. I've been on a bit of a western kick - cowboys, gunfights, ghost towns, that kind of thing - so I started kicking around a notebook full of ideas for western comics. They don't really connect to each other in any way other than genre and, loosely, the setting, but I figured I might as well get it out there on the internet.

Collectively, I've just been referring to them as "West," me being the master of original titles that I am. I'll be posting the stories a couple of pages at a time periodically - say three days a week. Not having anything resembling a readership, I suppose that's mostly for my own amusement as well as not having a couple of mile-long posts on this blog. You can begin reading after the jump.
